Chris Sund’s Mission: Helping People Become the Best Version of Themselves

From national conference stages to morning TV, the bestselling author and keynote speaker brings one message to every audience: you are capable of more.

When Chris Sund takes the stage, he brings a message that most people in the room already suspect is true: they are capable of more than they are doing. Sund, the bestselling author of You Are Capable of More: A No-Excuses Guide to Becoming Your Best Self, is a keynote speaker at national conferences, association events, sales kickoffs and leadership retreats.

Behind every talk is a personal mission. Sund wants to help as many people as possible become the best version of themselves, and that mission now reaches well beyond the stage and the page.

The Research Behind the Message

For his book, Sund surveyed more than 200 working adults. Ninety-two percent said they believe they are capable of more than they are doing. Seventy-eight percent said they delay action on things that matter to them, 85 percent said they second-guess themselves because of their own inner voice, and 71 percent said they fall short of their potential daily or weekly.

The biggest barriers, in order, were self-doubt and fear of failure, being too busy, and getting comfortable. Sund points out that none of them is about ability. They are about the stories people tell themselves and the permission they keep waiting for.

“My goal is to help people become the best version of themselves,” Sund said. “Self-doubt does not have to disappear for you to move forward. It can come along for the ride. It just does not get to drive.”

A Message Built on Experience

Sund has lived what he talks about. He has spent more than a decade in healthcare staffing, helping build a company from the ground up and leading through COVID, when the field became one of the most demanding places to work in the country, and later through an acquisition. As President and COO of Uniti Med and GQR Healthcare, and COO of Nebula, he helped grow Uniti Med 10x in revenue in two years, earning the #3 spot on the Inc. Regionals list of fastest-growing companies in the Midwest. The cultures he has built have been named Fortune Best Workplaces.

Across those years of hiring, developing and promoting people, he watched capable people hold back again and again until someone told them they were ready. In his experience, the interview does not win the promotion. The last year does. That is the core of what he shares from the stage: stop waiting for permission and start taking ownership.

The Ideas at the Center

Sund’s message comes back to a few simple ideas. Self-doubt can come along for the ride, but it does not get to drive. You do not have to have everything figured out to begin. Start where you are, work with what you have and take the next step. And when quitting feels easier, he offers the line he says he comes back to most often: “Most people don’t fail. They leave too early.”

“There is more inside of you than you have been using,” Sund said. “Most of the time the next level is not about learning something new. It is about finally acting on what you already know.”
